| dc.description.abstract | Objetivo. Introduction: Breast cancer is an important public health problem, and timely detection depends not only on the availability of mammography services but also on programs capable of ensuring adequate coverage, quality, and continuity of the diagnostic process. In Mexico, opportunistic screening models predominate, with limitations in the systematic identification and follow-up of the target population. Objective: To evaluate the quality of the mammography screening program for breast cancer detection at the UNEME-DEDICAM in San Luis Potosí, considering the structure, process, and outcome dimensions. Methods: A mixed-methods study with a descriptive-evaluative scope was conducted using the Donabedian quality-of-care model. The quantitative assessment included structure, process, and outcome indicators, as well as information from users and health personnel. The qualitative component explored the experiences of users and health personnel through semi-structured interviews. Documentary review, direct observation, quantitative instruments, and interviews were integrated to triangulate findings. Results: The unit has specialized infrastructure and equipment for breast cancer detection and diagnosis, and users reported a highly positive perception of the treatment received. However, underutilization of installed capacity was identified, with 3,994 mammograms performed in 2025. Process-related findings included heterogeneous knowledge among health personnel regarding criteria and indications established by the technical guidelines and delays in result delivery, particularly among women from municipalities outside the metropolitan area. In addition, 22.85% of mammograms were classified as BI-RADS 0. Qualitative findings revealed territorial barriers, dependence on external actors for transportation and follow-up, and organizational changes that have limited active recruitment and outreach strategies for the target population. Conclusions: The main opportunities for improvement were related to the organization, coordination, and management of the program rather than to women's acceptance of mammography. The loss of systematic mechanisms for population recruitment and follow-up has favored a predominantly opportunistic model and limited the use of installed capacity. Strengthening information systems, territorial outreach, institutional coordination, staff training, and diagnostic continuity could contribute to a more organized, timely, and equitable screening program. | es_MX |
