dc.description.abstract INTRODUCTION: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) refers to the treatment used by people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, ART is not only part of the treatment for people living with HIV; it also serves as prophylaxis to prevent transmission of the virus, a modality known as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Despite its widely documented clinical effectiveness, there is still limited understanding of how it transforms the bodily, sexual, and subjective experiences of those who use it. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To understand the experiences of men in the context of sexual practices following their access to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). METHODOLOGY: A qualitative study was conducted using a phenomenological approach, involving men currently on PrEP who are clients of the Genoveva Foundation in San Luis Potosí. A semi-structured guide was used to conduct individual interviews. The complete transcripts of the interviews were analyzed using Amedeo Giorgi’s method for phenomenology. RESULTS: Eleven men who have sex with men—including bisexual and gay men—were interviewed, revealing three main categories: 1) Motivations for using PrEP; 2) Changes in sexual practices; 3) Panopticon: From the surveilled body to the body constrained by fear. CONCLUSION: The findings show how men modify their sexual practices as a result of using pre-exposure prophylaxis and experience pleasure; this is related to a decrease in anxiety and fear, as well as the negotiation of desire in their sexual practices. es_MX
